HHC Drug Test: Why You Will Fail

We are in a renaissance period with the hemp plant, as more and more discoveries are being made about individual cannabinoids that deliver unique and desirable properties to the body.  At the moment, we’re seeing a wave of psychoactive but federally legal hemp-derived cannabinoids hit the market, including delta 8, delta 10, THC-O, and THC-P. Perhaps the cannabinoid that stands out the most, at least from a chemist’s standpoint, is hexahydrocannabinol (HHC).  Essentially, HHC is extremely different from the other psychoactive compounds mentioned above.  But, what does this mean in terms of drug-testing?  Is HHC usage a way to enjoy psychoactive effects while bypassing the risk of testing positive, or will it trigger a positive result just like delta 9 THC?

What Is HHC? 

One of the main “selling points” of hexahydrocannabinol is that it seems to mimic the effects of delta 9 THC despite being an entirely different compound.  Since the 1960s, when HHC was first being studied, researchers have determined that its molecular structure is extremely similar to that of delta 9 THC.  This is why so many people say that the experience they have when taking it is very similar to the experience of taking delta 9.  HHC can be viewed as a structurally simpler version of delta 9, which replaces the latter’s double bonds with hydrogen.

One thing that’s important to remember is that it seems likely that hexahydrocannabinol and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) vcy have about the same psychoactive activity.  Meaning, HHC could very well get you as high as THC.  Beyond that, there is a lot we don’t know about hexahydrocannabinol, as, despite having been early researched on its properties decades ago, this compound has been largely ignored ever since.

Can HHC Fail A Drug Test

To date, no studies have definitively determined whether or not hexahydrocannabinol is broken down by THC-COOH in the body.  In other words, we don’t know for sure whether or not using hexahydrocannabinol results in a positive test due to the presence of THC-COOH that it may be responsible for.  We only have anecdotal evidence to work with, and that tells us that HHC does not, in fact, cause the body to release THC-COOH.  

This wouldn’t actually be all that surprising, either.  HHC isn’t a THC compound, and so it is not too much of a stretch to theorize that the metabolization of HHC does not require an enzyme that specifically breaks down THC.  We do know that HHC breaks down in the body similarly to delta 9, due to the similarities between the two compounds, but HHC may be metabolized by an entirely different category of enzymes.

It is likely that HHC will cause you to fail a drug test. Still, we must reiterate that ultimately, we don’t know for sure.  We cannot promise you that if you take HHC, you will pass a drug test. Despite the fact that hemp and HHC is federally legal, this compound may fail a drug test similar to Delta 9 THC.

Factors that May Trigger A Positive HHC Drug Test

So, let’s say you’ve already taken HHC and you just found out you have a drug test coming up.  Well, good news is that there are some factors that influence how likely you are to fail your test, so you may get lucky depending on how you take your HHC.

#1: Last Time You Took HHC

Of course, when you last used HHC products will play a role.  The longer it has been since you used HHC or how long ago it was that you used it, the less chance there is that there are THC metabolites in your system. And therefore the lower chance of triggering a test. 

For example, If it has been over a few weeks since you last took HHC, there is a good chance that you will not fail your test.  By this point, it is very likely that there are no more traces of THC-COOH in your system, as the compound has fully metabolized and left the body. 

#2: How Often You Take HHC

The more frequently you take HHC products, the more likely you are to fail a test.  Daily use leading up to the test will likely cause you to fail, but if you’ve only taken it, say, twice in the last month, your chances are much better.

Like all THC’s, the more you take the longer period of time it will take for the metabolites to clear out of your body. HHC likely follows this same trend. That means that if you use HHC heavily, you will need a couple of weeks to safely become clean for a test. 

#3: Type of HHC Product

#4: How Your Body Metabolizes HHC

Our bodies are unique, and some of us just seem to metabolize HHC more quickly than others due to individual metabolic processes.  Some people basically luck out despite having taken HHC recently, while others may have levels of THC-COOH in the system longer than the norm.

Your metabolism plays a larger role than you think in the time it takes for you to become clear for a drug test. There’s no way to know exactly how efficiently your body breaks down THC compared to someone else. However, it is a safe to say that you cannot rely on a fast metabolism to get the HHC out of your body in a short manner. It is still very risky. 

#5: The Milligram Strength Dosage You Take Of The HHC

Naturally, the higher the milligram strength and dosage of HHC being consumed, the longer it will take to leave your body, as higher strengths mean more time needed to fully metabolize.

This is because the milligram strength of the HHC product you use determines how much detectable THC may be in your system at the time of a test. How Drug-Testing For THC Works

When a person takes a standard urine test for an employer or other type of organization, the test is not actually seeking to identify levels of THC in the body.  Instead, it’s looking for THC-COOH, which is a type of metabolite that is released into the body when a person consumes THC, in order to break it down.  THC-COOH is fat-soluble, which means that it remains in the body for quite a while.  This is why a person can test positive for several days up to weeks following THC usage.

Because standard drug tests are testing for a metabolite rather than a specific compound, this raises the question about how tests will respond to other cannabinoids.  In other words, are there other compounds in hemp that cause the body to produce THC-COOH besides delta 9 THC?

What Should You Know About HHC Before Getting Tested?

If you want to take your chances and use HHC products despite knowing that you may be drug-tested in the relatively near future, there are some things to keep in mind first.  One is that in the event that HHC does, in fact, trigger a positive result, your usage can make a difference.

Comparing it to THC, we see that those who only use marijuana once in a while can require 5 or so days before they test “clean”, while heavy users may need somewhere around a month of abstinence before THC-COOH is no longer detectable in their urine.

In other words, if you are worried that using hexahydrocannabinol can cause a positive result, you might want to apply this information to your hexahydrocannabinol usage.  In other words, consider when it’s time to take a break from using HHC so that the potential levels of THC-COOH would no longer be traceable by the date of your test.

Also, there are cannabinoids that do likely trigger THC-COOH, and those are delta 8 THC, delta 10 THC, THC-O, and THC-P.  Some hemp companies make products that combine hexahydrocannabinol with at least one of these cannabinoids, so taking them could cause you to fail a drug test, not because of the HHC itself.
