How Long Does THCVA Last in the Body?

THCVA is a cannabinoid that’s getting increased attention due its potential valuable properties that might be beneficial to the human body. A relative of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), it shares a lot in common with its more notorious cousin, and this is one of the reasons why so many people want to know how long the compound can last in the body before it fully metabolizes.  Especially, those who are drug-tested and want to make sure that they don’t compromise their employment.

Like all cannabinoids, THCVA’s process of metabolization can vary between different users.  So, there really is no clear answer as to when the compound will no longer be detectable.  As you’ll see, there are a lot of aspects to a person’s usage that determine how long it can remain, and this is especially important if you do have a drug test coming up, or if you are on any medications, as you’ll soon see.

How Long Do the Effects of THCVA Typically Last in Our System for?

Although we are mainly focusing on how long it takes for THCVA to fully clear out of the body, it’s still important to understand how long its effects themselves can last for.  THCVA is not going to get you high because it’s not psychoactive, but just because you don’t feel the cannabinoid, that doesn’t mean that its properties aren’t benefiting you while it’s active in the bloodstream.  After the effects do wear off, THCVA continues to remain in the body while getting metabolized, but at this point, its properties are no longer benefiting the user.

Tetrahydrocannabivarinic acid (THCVA) is the raw, acidic precursor cannabinoid to THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin), a minor cannabinoid in hemp.  THCV does have mild psychoactive properties, but because THCVA is raw, it does not.

So, how long after taking THCVA are its effects occurring in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS)?

Ultimately, that depends on the type of product you’ve taken, as each one absorbs and performs in its own unique way.

  • Inhalable Products (Vapes, Dabs, Flower): If you’re using a THCVA product that’s inhaled, like a vape cartridge, vape pen, concentrate (dab), or flower, then you’re going to experience the cannabinoid’s effects for the shortest duration of time since this product type absorbs at the fastest rate.  Is active in the body for about 1-2 hours.
  • Ingestible Products (Edibles, Capsules): Any product that involves ingesting THCVA, whether it be a capsule, a gummy or a beverage, will absorb at the slowest rate since it has to go through the digestive process.  Effects can last for about 8 hours.
  • Sublingual Products (Tinctures): Tinctures and other products that absorb sublingually absorb at a rate between inhalable and ingestible products.  As a result, THCVA is effective for about 3 to 4 hours.

Is There a Duration of Time When THCVA is Supposed to Leave Our System?

Essentially, it can take anywhere from 2 to 30 days for tetrahydrocannabivarinic acid to leave the body, and in rare cases it can even take longer.  Why?  Because there are certain variables that determine how long it takes for THCVA to exit the body, based on how you take the compound and how your body’s metabolism works.  However, we do know that:

  • Within about 30 minutes of THCVA absorbing into the system, around 50% of the cannabinoid does metabolize.
  • Another 25% metabolizes about 30 minutes later.
  • A remaining 25% left in the body, and at this point, metabolization slows down dramatically, which’s why THCVA can linger in the body for so long.

What This Means for Drug-Testing Purposes

Tetrahydrocannabivarinic acid can show up in a drug test, despite the fact that it’s not psychoactive.  This is because all THC compounds are processed by the same metabolite, known as THC-COOH.  But, whether or not you’re likely to fail a test largely depends on the type of test that’s being administered.

Method #1: Urine Tests: Urine tests are the most popular, looking for THC-COOH in a person’s urine.  These tests are very reliable, and they can detect THC-COOH for about 2-30 days following usage, and in rarer cases, up to 6 weeks.

Method #2: Saliva Tests: A saliva test is usually administered by a law enforcement official to determine whether or not you are likely to be intoxicated.  This type of test can only detect past usage of up to 10 hours.  But, it’s unknown whether or not it can actually detect THCVA.

Method #3: Blood Tests: Blood tests are usually administered in hospitals and other clinical environments.  They can only show if you’re currently experiencing the effects of THCVA, as the cannabinoid is only effective when it’s in the blood.

Method #4: Hair Tests: A forensic hair test analyzes a strand of hair for THC, and may be able to pick up THCVA levels, but only after 90 days since the last usage.  This type of test is usually reserved for autopsies.

Method #5: Perspiration Tests: A perspiration test involves applying a patch to a person’s skin for 2 weeks, since THC-COOH can escape the body through sweat.  This type of test is invasive and time-consuming, which is why it’s usually only performed for clinical studies.  We don’t know if THCVA could be picked up through this type of testing.

What Actually Plays a Role in How Long THCVA Could Normally Last in the Body For?

Ultimately, after six weeks, you’re almost definitely going to have cleared all tetrahydrocannabivarinic acid from your body.  Exactly how long it takes will depend on certain factors.

#1: Frequency of Use

How frequently you take THCVA matters, because the more often you take it, the more “backed up” the metabolization process will be, since it won’t be able to keep up with the amount of THCVA that’s getting absorbed int the body.

#2: Delivery Method

We mentioned that the delivery method determines how long THCVA’s effects can last, but it may influence how long the cannabinoid remains in the system as well, with ingestible products taking the longest amount of time and inhalable products the shortest.

#3: Product Strength

The amount of THCVA milligrams you consume will matter for similar reasons to the frequency of usage.  The more THCVA you consume, the more the cannabinoid will essentially get backed up while the body’s metabolism can’t keep up.

#4: Your Metabolism

Some people just have a faster metabolism than others.  Things like your current health, diet and water intake can all impact how quickly you process cannabinoids like THCVA.

#5: When You Last Took THCVA

When you last took THCVA will obviously make a difference in whether or not it’s still in your system.  If you took the cannabinoid a couple days ago, it’s definitely still in your body.  If it’s been over a month, the chances are incredibly slim.

#6: Product Quality

Low-quality THCVA products that have expired or extracted using poor methods can have subpar chemical stability, and this can actually mean that a lot of the cannabinoid gets metabolized rather than taking effect in the body, thus clearing out at a faster rate.

How Long After Using THCVA it Safe to Take Any Type of Medication (Prescription or Non-Prescription)?

Very important to point out that tetrahydrocannabivarinic acid might suppress an enzyme called CYP3A4, that breaks down many common medications.  Meaning, consuming medication(s) while THCVA is in the system may cause the medication to accumulate in the bloodstream, which in turn, can become dangerous.  However, no studies have been conducted on THCVA’s interactions with any particular medications.

The Bottom Line: THCVA Can Last Up To 30 Days In The Body

Ultimately, retrahydrocannabivarinic acid levels can remain in the body for quite a while after the last dosage was taken, but how long exactly is not something that we can clearly answer. Again, if you’re taking a drug test soon, or if you are on any medications, you’ll want to be extra careful.  This, by either avoiding THCVA altogether, or, in the case of the latter circumstance, talking to your doctor first.

THCVA hemp-derived compound that has been found to stay in your system around 30 days in the body before being completely gone. If you are taking a drug test, we recommend refraining use of THCVA products such as vape cartridges, gummies or tinctures as they will fail a drug test.
