How to Unclog Delta 8 THC Vape Cartridges

As delta 8 THC continues to become a highly popular type of product on the vape market, delta 8 vape cartridges are clearly outselling all other delivery methods, and it’s easy to see why.  When vaping delta-8 compound, we get to enjoy its effects within minutes, while feeling those effects more potently due to this unique type of delivery method.  Plus, cartridges are very convenient and user-friendly, requiring next to no maintenance while operating reliably.

However, even the highest-quality delta 8 THC cartridges can get clogged from time to time.  The reality of delta 8 distillate in cartridges is that they can become so thick under certain circumstances that they end up plugging up the mouthpiece, so that no vapor can get through. Which is why the Delta 8 vape is not hitting. While this is certainly annoying when you’re planning on relaxing with a few hits of delta-8 vapor, the good thing is that clogs are very easy to fix, and even easier to prevent.

What are Delta 8 THC Vape Cartridges?

Before we talk about clogged cartridges, we need to briefly explain what a delta 8 vape cart is so that you can understand where the potential for clogging comes from.  A delta 8 vape cart is a small cartridge made out of plastic or glass, which is filled with a delta-8 distillate and strain terpene flavors.  The liquid consists of a delta8 extract derived from the hemp plant, which can contain extra ingredients at the manufacturer’s discretion.

This liquid inside the cartridge is converted into vapor through the heat of the coil sitting at the base of the cartridge.  The coil’s job is to use the power of the battery to properly heat the distillate so that it turns into thick vapor that’s smooth and easy to inhale.

The vapor is inhaled through a mouthpiece, which is usually a small, tapered component at the top of the cartridge that acts as a chimney for the vapor.  The clog occurs in the mouthpiece, as it has a thin airflow channel to properly filter the vapor.

Why are Delta 8 THC Cartridges Capable of Clogging?

Well, there are a few reasons.  Delta 8 THC extract is naturally quite thick, being a natural product derived from hemp that is highly concentrated.  The thicker the liquid inside a coil, the more capable it is of clogging up the air passageway in the mouthpiece. A clog can become more likely if the liquid is particularly potent.

Companies cut their delta 8 distillate with terpenes to make them not as thick and less likely to clog. For example, 3Chi, one of the largest Delta 8 THC brands, uses 95% Delta 8 with a little bit of terpenes. This high percentage of Delta8 is great in terms of ensuring maximum purity and potency levels, but it does increase the risk of clogs.

This is because, as stated before, Delta 8 distillate is thick. Therefore having a cartridge that thick without much terpenes to cut it will lead to heavy clogging. That is why our popular Binoid Delta 8 THC vapes use 92% Delta 8 distillate with terpenes so rarely ever clogged or get stuck.  Either way, Delta 8 THC is very thick at room temperature, and only becomes more like a liquid or glue when heated.

How to Know if Your Delta 8 THC Vape Cartridge Has Clogged

Identifying a vape cartridge clog is actually quite easy to do.  If your cartridge is clogged, you’ll notice when you try to inhale.  You will not get any airflow whatsoever, and therefore not get any vapor.  This is different from pulling on your device and getting air, but no vapor.  If this is what is happening to you, there may be an issue with the battery connection rather than a clog.

How to Unclog a Delta 8 THC Vape Cartridge: The Proven Methods that Work

Now that you know why clogs can occur, let’s talk about how to fix them.  There are a few different methods that work, and we will cover each of them now.

Method #1: Heat

One method for trying to unclog a delta 8 vape cartridge is to apply heat to it.  Like we said, delta 8 vape carts can clog if they get too cool, because the vape oil gets thicker and therefore clogs the mouthpiece.  So, you can simply heat up the cart so that the vape oil gets thin and runny, just like when you put coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds.

There are a few ways to heat your cartridge:

  • Hold a blow dryer about a foot away from the cartridge and apply heat for 30 seconds.
  • Another option is to put the cartridge in a warmer area, such as near a radiator.
  • You can also try just rubbing the cartridge between your hands for a minute.

On the flip side, there are a few methods that should NEVER be done to heat your cartridge:

  • Never put a delta 8 vape cartridge in a microwave because the cart’s metal components will cause sparks to fly and that can be extremely dangerous.
  • Never submerge your delta 8 cartridge in warm water, as water can damage the cart.
  • Never put a delta 8 vape cartridge in an oven or stove, as that will simply melt the cart.

Also, keep in mind that too much heat is bad for the compounds in the cartridge, causing them to degrade and lose their potency.  So, apply heat in a short, controlled manner instead.

Method #2: Puncture

You can also try puncturing the clog with a safety pin or toothpick inserted through the tiny holes of the mouthpiece.  In many cases, this will dislodge whatever is plugging up the mouthpiece so that the airflow returns to normal.

Method #3: Take Hits without Firing the Device

If the clog is minor enough, you can simply pull on the mouthpiece without actually firing any hits.  The suction of your inhales can dislodge small clogs that are in the mouthpiece.

Prevention Tips to Avoid Delta 8 THC Vape Cartridge Clogs in the Future

Of course, it’s better to prevent clogs than have to remedy them after they have occurred.  So, it is easy to prevent your delta 8 cart from clogging by doing the following:

  • Avoid leaving your delta 8 vape cartridge in an area that goes below room temperature, because this will cause the liquid to thicken.
  • Only buy top-quality delta 8 vape cartridges from trusted brands that use high-quality ingredients and build their carts with exceptional construction.
  • Look for delta 8 vape cartridges that have adequate built-in airflow because the formulas inside are less prone to getting too thick.

Delta 8 THC Vape Cartridge Leaking Diagnosis & Tips

Vape cartridges can leak for many reasons, such as physical trauma, breaking, and other things. However, here are the most popular reasons for Delta 8 cartridges leaking.

  1. Low Quality Control: The manufacturers of the vapes likely have poor quality assurance processes which also leads to great risks of leaks. With low quality cartridges, it’s easier for those devices to loosen, or for users to unscrew the caps by hand. Causing the oil to leak out.
  2. Improper Storage: Delta 8 vape cartridges sometimes expand and ultimately leak when devices are stored at high temperatures for an extended time. To help avoid this problem, we recommend storing your disposable pens between 10˚-25˚C (50˚-77˚F).
  3. Non-Upright Position: When delta 8 vape carts are left sitting on the table or storage location sideways upside down, or not upright this can sometimes cause leakage. Storing your cartridge upright can prevent leaking and prolong the life of the Delta 8 cart
