What Is CBDA and CBGA?

With cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) becoming the new must-have cannabinoids, it’s important to give customers a good overview of what to expect from this unique combination of hemp derivatives, both in terms of the positive effects they may feel and the potential for side effects.

At Binoid, we’ve recently introduced our Premium CBD-A & CBGA Immunity Natural Flavor Tincture, and we’re gonna help you decide whether or not it’s a formula worth even adding into your routine based on the distinctive properties of these two cannabinoids.

What Is CBDA and CBGA?

CBDA and CBG are simply the raw forms of cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG), respectively, before the plant is decarboxylated.  Decarboxylation is a heating process that activates certain properties of cannabinoids – most famously, it allows tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to go from non-intoxicating to psychoactive.

What we know about these cannabinoids is that before each is decarboxylated, they’re used by the body in a unique manner that allows them to offer a totally different variety of positive effects to the human system.  We do also want to point out that neither cannabinoid is psychoactive.

Benefits of CBDA and CBGA?

Only recently have cannabis researchers begun to really dive into the potentials of these two cannabinoids, but already, there’s a good number of studies that show that CBDA and CBGA could offer pretty profound effects.

Benefit #1: Effects on Seizures

Studies show that CBGA in particular could offer powerful neuroprotective properties that, in particular, could reduce the frequency of seizures in those with epilepsy.  This also means that there could very well be other benefits to the neurological system which simply haven’t been tested yet.

Benefit #2: Reduced Oxidative Stress

CBGA may reduce oxidative stress in a way that could contribute to the prevention of heart disease, one of the most common killers in the world.  Oxidative stress causes the cardiovascular system to work harder, and at a certain point, the heart can fail due to its inability to keep up.

Benefit #3: Regulation of Metabolism

CBGA may play a role in regulating the body’s metabolism, according to researchers.  Studies are already suggesting that the cannabinoid may play a role in the management of metabolic disorders that can have major implications on our health.

Benefit #4: Increased Serotonin Levels

CBDA has been shown in studies to have a role in regulating 5-ht receptors, to increase serotonin uptake in a way that could reduce nausea as well as sleep.  Plus, increased serotonin is correlated with improved mood, focus and energy, while low serotonin is associated with depression and other mood disorders.

Benefit #5: Anti-Inflammatory

Data shows that CBDA has an inhibitory effect on COX-2, an enzyme that precedes the body’s inflammatory response.  This means that the cannabinoid could potentially prevent inflammation, which could have major implications.  Some suggest that consuming CBDA prior to working out could possibly minimize the risk of injury as well as general pain caused by exerting the muscles of the body.

Side Effects of CBDA and CBGA?

As you can see so far, cannabidiolic acid and cannabigerolic acid carry some promise with them, and it’s clear, based on the potential benefits above, that there are a lot of good reasons to give these cannabinoids a try.  But, what about side effects?  Basically, they’re no different from those of cannabidiol.  We know that CBD is gentle and nontoxic, and its side effects are typically very short-lived and mild, while the large majority of users don’t actually experience any side effects at all.

The side effects that a person may experience with these cannabinoids, especially when consumed in large doses, are:

  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes
  • Lightheadedness
  • Grogginess
  • Sleepiness
  • Headache

Keep in mind that you should talk to your doctor before taking cannabidiolic acid and cannabigerolic acid, especially if you’re on any medications (prescription or non-prescription).  CBDA and CBGA may suppress the CYP3A4 enzyme that breaks down half the meds we take.  What this could mean is the possibility of certain drugs accumulating in the body rather than getting properly metabolized.  Plus, it could be helpful to discuss these cannabinoids with a doctor in general, as they might be able to help you personalize a routine based on your specific needs.
