Delta 8 THC For First-Time Users

For many, it can be hard to believe that delta 8 THC really was not a thing until a year ago, when it quickly exploded onto the scene and changed the hemp market forever.  It is a relatively new addition to the market, however, which means that there are still a large number of people who haven’t yet tried it out for themselves but do want to find out what it can do for them.

Delta 8 is a compound from the Hemp plant, that is known to be psychoactive similar to Delta 9 THC which is popular from Marijuana. Delta 8 benefits such as feelings of happiness, being uplifted, relief, and others have made this compound very popular for users of Hemp-based products.

What Do First-Time Beginner Delta-8 THC Users Need to Know?

If you are a total delta 8 beginner, allow us to guide you through familiarizing yourself with the cannabinoid.

#1: Delta 8 THC is Psychoactive

First and foremost, it is important to know that delta 8 THC and Delta THC products are psychoactive.  What this means is that the cannabinoid contains psychoactive properties that cause the user to experience a high.  The high produced by delta 8 is usually considered calming and uplifting, mainly affecting one’s mood rather than their state of consciousness, concentration, memory, or clarity of mind.

In short, delta-8 will cause an intoxication known to many as a “body high”. Where the body is more affected and feels the high sensations more than the mind. However, if you take enough Delta 8 it can get your mind high as well. The psychoactive effects are very real, do not operate any machinery or vehicles after taking Delta 8 THC.

#2: Delta 8 is Less Psychoactive Than Delta 8 THC From Marijuana

Delta 8 THC is less psychoactive than marijuana, however, being only about 70% as potent in terms of its intoxicating effects.  This is because delta 8 is almost the same chemical structure as Delta 9 THC, with just one isomer difference making it Delta 8 and not Delta 9. This creates a slightly less powerful bond with your receptors, and also gives you less of a mental high, and more of a body high.

#3: Delta 8 THC is a Cannabinoid, and Works with Your Endocannabinoid System

Cannabinoids are compounds that are unique to the cannabis genus, and the ones that we consume come from the hemp plant, which is federally legal.  Cannabinoids are distinctive in how they behave in the body.  They are the only compounds that directly feed the body’s endocannabinoid system, which maintains homeostasis by dispersing cannabinoids throughout cannabinoid receptors located all throughout the body, which each regulate the function of a specific process of the body.

Cannabinoid receptors belong to one of two categories: CB1 and CB2.

  • CB1 receptors pertain to functions of the brain and nervous system.
  • CB2 receptors correspond largely with the functions of the immune system and digestive system.

Cannabidiol (CBD) works with both of these types of receptors, but delta 8 works solely with CB1 receptors.  This is why its effects relating to processes associated with the brain and nervous system may be more pronounced.

#4: Everybody Responds to Delta 8 Differently

Maybe your buddy has been telling you about how delta 8 THC affects them, and it’s convinced you to try it in search of the same results.  Know that delta 8 ultimately affects all of us differently, and so your experience may be unique.  You may find that your psychoactive experience is different from someone else’s, or that it helps you with pain while a family member finds it more useful for sleep.

#5: You Shouldn’t Operate Vehicles After Taking Delta 8 THC

Because delta 8 THC is an intoxicating substance, you should not drive when its psychoactive properties are active in your system.  This is dangerous and can get you into serious trouble.

#6: Delta 8 THC Could Cause You to Fail a Drug Test

Delta 8 THC may result in a failed drug test.  Standard urine tests look for an enzyme called THC-COOH which is produced in the body after taking marijuana.  Delta 8 is similar enough to the delta 9 in marijuana that it may trigger the same enzyme, which would result in a failed test.  Therefore, consider waiting until after an upcoming drug test to start a routine with delta-8. Drug tests look for all THC, and Delta 8 would be included.

#7: Delta 8 is Legal in All But 11 States

Delta 8 is federally legal, because the Farm Bill of 2018 declared that all hemp derivatives are legal except for delta 9.  However, eleven states have outlawed delta-8:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah

#8: Delta 8 Comes in Many Delivery Methods

When starting to take delta 8, it’s important to choose the right delivery method according to the experience you’d like to have.  All delivery methods are effective in their own way, so it comes down to personal choice.

  • Inhalable Delta 8 Products: Delta 8 vape products and delta 8 flower (CBD flower infused with delta 8 extract) act very quickly, often within minutes, and last for only about an hour or two.  The Delta 8 benefits are quite potent compared to other delivery methods. Delta 8 vapes usually have 1000mg of Delta 8 in each.
  • Delta 8 Tinctures: Delta 8 tinctures absorb through the sublingual tissue under the tongue, and are easy to dose out as they come in pipette bottles.  The effects “kick in” within an hour, lasting for about 6 hours while feeling less potent than inhalable products. Delta 8 tincture dosages can range from 300mg to 10,000mg of Delta 8 in each.
  • Edibles and Capsules: Delta 8 Gummy edibles and capsules can take up to 2 hours to take effect, but the effects can last for up to 8 or even 10 hours depending on the dosage. Delta 8 THC edibles range from 10mg to 50mg of Delta 8 per gummy.

#9: Delta 8 Comes in Different Strengths

Delta 8 THC products, like CBD products, come in different milligram strengths, determining the number of milligrams of pure delta 8 are in the formula.  Therefore, the milligram strength on a product’s label lets you know how potent each dose will be.  Beginners should start on the lower end, as they may want to build a tolerance to delta 8 THC’s psychoactive effects early on.  You can increase the milligram strength as you continue to take delta 8.

Delta 8 THC dosing can be pretty delicate, as it is a psychoactive compound that gets you high. As well, it does not take much to get your high to a moderate amount. As in, for more most beginners you may only need 5 to 8 milligrams to get high. That is around 1/5th of a gummy, 1-2 vape hits, or a tiny amount of a Delta 8 tincture.

#10: You Should Start with a Low Dose and Build it Up as Needed

Similarly, you should start with a lower dose in the beginning to be on the safe side.  Delta 8 products come with recommended dosage amounts on their packaging.  Follow these instructions, and know that you can increase your dose at a later time if you wish.

#11: Delta 8 THC is Something You Should Speak to Your Doctor About

It is always important to let your doctor know that you plan on taking something regularly.  They can offer valuable insight according to your unique medical needs and can let you know if any medications you may be taking could interact negatively with the cannabinoid.

#12: DO NOT EVER Give Delta 8 THC to Pets or Children

Neither pets nor children can tolerate the psychoactive properties of delta 8.  Therefore, never administer your supply to either children or animals.

Delta 8 THC Beginners Dosage Chart & Guide

For Delta 8 and first time users, you don’t need a large dose of Delta 8 as stated before. A small amount of Delta 8 does the trick to get the benefits you are looking for.

  1. Beginner Delta 8 THC dosing (low tolerance): 5mg-10mg per use
  2. Intermediate Delta 8 THC dosing (medium tolerance): 8mg-20mg per use
  3. Advanced Delta 8 THC dosing (high tolerance): 20mg-80mg+ per use
