What is HHC-R?
HHC-R is 9(R)-hexahydrocannabinol – one of the two stereoisomers we referred to earlier. In a way, you could call it a purified version of HHC. Like we said, the HHC cannabinoid as it exists in isolated form is made up of two stereoisomers – 9R HHC, and 9S HHC. HHC-R is 100% 9R HHC, and that’s what we ultimately want.
To better explain, let’s say that HHC has two feet: 9S HHC being the left foot, and 9R HHC being the right foot. These molecules are identical in their composition, but even so, are arranged differently – hence the “isomer” in stereoisomer. As a sidenote, cannabinoids are isomers of one another, which is why we can rearrange the molecules of CBD to produce HHC.
Getting back to our explanation of stereoisomers, let’s say that the cannabinoid receptors in the body are like a shoe made for a right foot. Only 9R HHC can fit into that cannabinoid receptor. 9S HHC just gets completely discarded, as it serves no purpose.
That being said, 9R HHC is the stereoisomer within the HHC cannabinoid that works with cannabinoid receptors, to produce all of the effects we associate with it, psychoactive and otherwise. 9S HHC does not have the ability to attach to cannabinoid receptors at all, so in essence, it’s useless to us.
HHC distillate, which is used in HHC (not HHC-R) products, consists both of 9R HHC and 9S HHC. That means that if you have, say, a 25mg HHC gummy in your hand, that 25mg of HHC isn’t all active. Some of that 25mg HHC consists of 9S HHC, which serves no purpose, and is ultimately diluting the effects of 9R HHC, which is what you want.
Now you can see how HHC-R solves this problem. Only now have chemists figured out a way to totally isolate 9R HHC, and discard 9S HHC. This means that HHC-R is going to give you more of the effects that you want than HHC, and that’s also why people are saying that HHC-R is stronger than even delta 9 THC.
How Much 9S HHC is in Standard HHC Products?
Here’s where things get even more complicated. Any time a manufacturer sets out to create an HHC distillate through isomerization and distillation, they don’t know what the ratio of 9R HHC to 9S HHC is going to be. It can be 2:1 or 1:1, and neither, of course, is ideal, as the latter molecule is inactive (ineffective). Still, this means that a lot of HHC products may only be giving you half the potency of what pure 9R HHC could offer.
And, to make matters more consuming, most standard lab-testing methods pick up 9R HHC as delta 8 THC, which means that a lab report may not even give you, the consumer, the information you need to know about how much 9R HHC is in the product.
Is There Anything Else About HHC-R That You Need to Know?
Ultimately, HHC-R is just 9R HHC, aka “active HHC”, and so there’s nothing about its properties that are different from those of hexahydrocannabinol, except that they’re stronger. That’s because you’ve already been taking HHC-R if you’ve ever had HHC, just in combination with 9S HHC, which doesn’t have any known efficacy whatsoever.
The Winner is…9R HHC is Powerful and 9S HHC is Weak
So, what really makes these cannabinoids different from one another? Well, although there is a lot of conjecture, it is believed that once again, the 9S Inactive has no benefit for you while the 9R HHC active can give you energizing effects. Although, one can come to some sort of a conclusion that 9S is weaker than 9R, but still, you may not be fully aware if whether or not it has any consequences.
