CBDA Cannabinoid Dosage: How Much Should You Take?

Already, Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA) is quickly proving to be a gamechanger of a cannabinoid.  Especially, after a study done just recently published demonstrated this cannabinoid’s potential in mitigating the absorption of SARS-CoV-2 into the body’s cells.  CBDA is, quite simply, the raw form of cannabidiol (CBD) prior to decarboxylation (heating).  What many people don’t realize though, is that this raw precursor actually maintains an entirely distinctive series of properties that might be useful to the human body.

You see, the more we learn about Cannabidiolic Acid through research, the more the hemp community is eager to try it.  CBDA is non-psychoactive, and like cannabidiol, it’s nontoxic.  That being said, understanding how much to take, in order to then ensure the most effective experience is tricky.  Why?  Well, since there is no standard dosage guideline just yet, as there is with CBD, delta 8 THC, delta 10 THC, and other more popular cannabinoids.  Still, we can offer some basic guidance on CBDA dosing, since it can be compared to CBD due to both cannabinoids likely sharing similar bioavailability levels.

CBDA Dosage vs. CBDA Strength

Before we get into the specifics of dosing, let’s quickly clear up the difference between the two terms “dosage” and “strength” since both matter in equal measure.

• Dosage: Refers to the amount of product consumed, such as 1 dropper of Cannabidiolic Acid oil, or a single CBDA-infused gummy.

• Strength: Refers to the number of milligrams in that dosage amount.  CBDA-based products come in a variety of milligram strengths, just like CBD.  So, a single 50mg CBDA gummy is going to be different from one 10mg CBDA gummy when it comes to potency.

What Factors Influence How Much CBDA You Might Want to Take?

While we can offer general guidance when it comes to dosing with Cannabidiolic Acid, there are a few things that should always be considered, as these can influence which end of the dosing spectrum can meet a user’s preferences.

#1: Your CBDA Tolerance 

CBDA is non-psychoactive, so tolerance is not as important as it would be with psychoactive cannabinoids like delta 8 and THC-O.  Taking a higher dose than most beginners would take is not going to give you the feeling of being “too high”.  But, CBDA may cause some short-lived grogginess, just like CBD, if you’ve a low tolerance or consume a very strong concentration of it.

#2: Your CBDA Delivery Method

Each delivery method has its own level of bioavailability (how much of the cannabinoid actually gets absorbed and used effectively as opposed to getting metabolized).  The most bioavailable products are those that are inhaled as well as topicals, followed by sublinguals, and then edible products.  If you’re taking a low-bioavailability product like a CBD gummy, you may want to take a little higher of a dose to make up for the lower bioavailability. 

#3: Your CBDA Needs

We also determine how much CBDA to take based on what we’re taking it for.  For example, if you just want to see what it ‘feels’ like, you may take a fairly low dose.  But, if you’re looking to address something specific with CBDA based on the properties associated with this cannabinoid, you might find that a higher dose is needed to provide those desired effects.

What is the Proper CBDA Dosage?

Now, we can go over the general dosages we recommend for each type of CBDA product.  Like we said, each delivery method has its own bioavailability level, and we take that into account when coming up with the best amount to take based on the product that is being consumed.

#1: CBDA Vapes 

CBDA vape cartridges and disposable vape pens are made with a Cannabidiolic Acid extract, and the relatively low temperatures to which the vape oil is exposed do not decarboxylate the cannabinoid.  They come in various strains as well, because the Cannabidiolic Acid distillate is combined with plant-derived terpenes.

CBDA vapes contain a full gram of vape oil equaling1000mg.  Now, 1 gram equals about 100 puffs total, which would mean that a CBDA cart or disposable would contain about 10mg per puff.  But, the problem is, certain variables like how deeply you inhale and the output level of your battery can dramatically change that amount.  Instead, we focus on the number of puffs taken.

• Threshold Dose: 1 puff
• Moderate Dose: 2-3 puffs
• Advanced Dose: 4+ puffs 

#2: CBDA Tincture 

A CBDA tincture is an oil-based formula that comes in a dropper bottle, consisting of pure Cannabidiolic Acid distillate and a carrier oil such as MCT oil.  It’s absorbed sublingually, or below the tongue, to offer a generous bioavailability level while still being an oral product.  Comes in various milligram strengths, and to figure out how many milligrams are in each milliliter, you just divide the number of milligrams by the number of milliliters.  Example: If you have a 1000mg 30ml bottle, then that would give you 33mg per milliliter, which will fill a dropper.

• Threshold Dose: 10mg-20mg 
• Moderate Dose: 21mg-33mg
• Advanced Dose: 34+ mg

#3: CBDA Gummies

CBDA gummies are unknown and loved for their long-lasting effects – up to 8 hours – not to mention they’re tasty flavor.  They’re just fruity gummies that have been infused with Cannabidiolic Acid distillate, and even make dosing easy since each gummy contains an equal amount of CBDA.  Available in a variety of milligram strengths, and the amount per gummy is clearly indicated on the product’s label.  Again, because of the low bioavailability of edibles, the strengths will be a bit higher when it comes to dosing to compensate.

• Threshold Dose: 15mg-25mg
• Moderate Dose: 26mg-40mg
• Advanced Dose: 40+ mg 

#4: CBDA Capsules

Similar to CBDA gummies, CBDA capsules can be a convenient way for taking capsules.  Although caps also have a slower onset time, they do have long-lasting effects.  Contain fewer ingredients with the Cannabidiolic Acid distillate inside the capsule. 

• Threshold Dose: 10mg-25mg

• Moderate Dose: 20mg-50mg
• Advanced Dose: 50+ mg 

#5: CBDA Dabs/Concentrates

CBDA dabs and concentrates are extremely potent products that come from concentrating the raw plant material to yield higher levels of the desired cannabinoids.  They’re vaporized using a special type of device known as a dabbing device.  Like vapes, they come in a variety of strain options based on their terpene profiles.  CBDA dabs are not intoxicating, and they’re best for those who crave very strong effects associated with this cannabinoid.  Dabs also come in 1-gram sizes in most cases, and due to the same principles we discussed earlier with vaping products, we are going to measure the dosage in puffs rather than milligrams.

• Threshold Dose: 1 puff
• Moderate Dose: 2-3 puffs
• Advanced Dose: 4+ puffs 

#6: CBDA Flower

CBDA flower is raw hemp flower buds infused with pure Cannabidiolic Acid distillate (adds to the existing CBDA that’s in raw flower).  Can be extracted at very low temperatures to prevent the conversion of CBDA into CBD.  Flower comes in an abundance of strain options, and you can find both loose bud and pre-roll form.  Flower is usually smoked or vaped and doesn’t have an inherent milligram strength.  Again, we then look at the puff count to determine the dose.

• Threshold Dose: 1 puff
• Moderate Dose: 2-3 puffs
• Advanced Dose: 4+ puffs 

#7: CBDA Topicals

CBDA topicals are used for localized issues, with the cannabinoid absorbing directly into cannabinoid receptors that are located in the skin and deep tissue where the product is applied.  They take effect within just minutes as the cannabinoid is applied to where its properties are most needed, and those effects stay localized without ever affecting other areas of the body.  

Topicals come in various milligram strength options which reflect the entire number of milligrams in the product container.  There is no dosing guide that tells you how many milligrams to apply to the body to get the desired results.  Instead, the guidance is to cover the affected area with a thin, even layer of the product and massage it into the skin so that it fully absorbs.  However, we do recommend choosing a CBDA topical with at least 100mg Cannabidiolic Acid per ounce, to ensure enough potency of the formula to get the results you’re looking for.
